What happened
The first halving arrived almost four years after the genesis block. Until then, miners had received 50 new bitcoin per block; from this block on they received 25.
Bitcoin was still a small experiment: the price was around $10 to $13, and the network was mostly run by hobbyists and early businesses. A year later the price passed $1,000.
The halving took place 1,425 days after the genesis block. On the first day of that month the price was $10.85. In the 18 months that followed, the highest first-of-month price was $948.00 in December 2013, +8,637% from where it started. Past results do not predict the future, and many things besides the halving affected the price.
