Taproot made complex transactions, such as multi-signature payments and some Lightning channels, look like ordinary payments on the blockchain. That improves privacy and lowers fees. It also introduced Schnorr signatures to Bitcoin.

Unlike the SegWit debate, Taproot was adopted with broad agreement across miners, developers and users, which many saw as a sign of how the process had matured.
