What happened

The second halving came during a quiet period. The price was around $650 and the community was divided over how Bitcoin should scale, but the schedule ran exactly as written.

Over the next year and a half, the price rose from about $650 to nearly $20,000, which gave halvings their reputation as the start of a new cycle.

Why it mattered

The 2016 halving confirmed that the supply schedule runs on its own. See all halvings on the halving page.
