What happened

Hanyecz posted on the Bitcointalk forum offering 10,000 BTC for a couple of pizzas. Days later another user ordered two Papa John’s pizzas for him and received the coins. At that time the bitcoins were worth roughly $40.

Today the date is celebrated each year as Bitcoin Pizza Day. The story is told both as a milestone, because it gave Bitcoin its first widely cited price in goods, and as a cautionary tale about how much those coins would be worth later.

Why it mattered

The pizza purchase showed that Bitcoin could buy something real. Use the Bitcoin calculator to see how a purchase from that year looks today.
