What happened

Rising interest from China, a Senate hearing, and heavy press coverage lifted the price from about $200 in October to more than $1,000 by the end of November.

The peak did not last. In December, China’s central bank barred financial institutions from handling Bitcoin, and the price dropped sharply. It would take until 2017 for Bitcoin to trade above $1,000 again and stay there.

Why it mattered

The first $1,000 was the headline that made Bitcoin a household word. See Bitcoin in 2013 and the price table.
